I was looking at the stats of the items posted here on Motomo and noticed the post of Rods FXR was one of the most popular over the past year. We did this bike for him almost two years ago now. It was completely torn down and rebuilt. I wouldn't really call it a restoration because it got a handful of upgrades but, it was a full nut and bolt situation. Anyway, here are some bigger shots for for everyone who made it our second most viewed post. Second only to Bubba Shoberts Honda RS750 Flat Tracker.

West Coast Choppers CFL Part 2

Basket Case Sportster/Buell Update

I thought this project would have been a little further along but since it's a shop deal, it only gets what it gets when time is available. I had some time to kill on Sunday so I jammed over to the shop to see if I could get a few things done on this thing. Got the rear wheel, rear brake, chain line squared away first. Once that was done I moved on to the rear fender and struts. The seat was next but I'm not sure it's going to stay. The fender is a modified Chica 5". The rear brake is Perfomance Machine 4 piston with a PM rear disc. The seat is from West Eagle and Biltwell's cast stainless steel seat hinge. The tail light is just an idea at this point. Stay tuned, it will get done.

These are still one of my favorite chopper frames. We've got this CFL project going together this week. This one is an original 2 up, running Paughco's narrow springer and rolling on a set of Roland Sands Designs, Diesels. It's going to be powered by an 113" S&S backed by a Baker 6speed. Easyriders opened up their 2012 bike show tour this year at the Anaheim Convention Center. Pomona had been the venue for the past fifteen or so years but for some reason unknown to me, they moved it. Anyway, since it was really close to the shop, we brought a few bikes over Friday evening. Here's some of what we saw around the show before it opened.

Leo Romero 2006 Sprotster 883r Project

Leo's buddy, Timothy called us one day and asked if we could help out one of his riders with his bike. He didn't really know what was wrong with it but he knew it didn't run. So, we gave Leo a call and set a time to pick it up. When I got to his house he opened the garage to reveal this 883r that had seen much better days. Most of it was in boxes, flat tires and missing a bunch of parts and dirtier than any 2066 should ever be. Leo's job requires him to travel a lot so he just didn't have time to deal with it anymore. He asked if we could get it sorted out and back on the road. And since he's been riding his Night Train around for the last two years, the little 883 was not going to feed his need anymore. So he also asked us to give him a little more power. Well, it's almost done, Leo. The good people at Branch-O'keefe, Zippers, Andrews, JE, Dyna Tech, Thunder Header, and Mikuni have all helped us help you get a little more power.

Bud Hemstreet Part 2

A couple of days ago, I showed you some pic of Buds Big Block Chevy powered '55 Dodge Pickup. After I shot the pictures he offered to take me for a ride, of course I accepted.. So, we hop in the truck, he fires it up and immediately starts to clear it out by giving it a few good 3500ish rpm revs. Now, I been on quite a few rides like this, with all kinds of different people. And, most of the time, you get in the car, they find a little open road and stomp on the gas. However, as soon as the car really starts to come to life, they take their foot of the pedal and look at you ask, what do you think? Usually I'll just say, wow, that's nice. But, what I'm really thinking is, what was that? Did you just shit yourself? Well, I didn't have any of those thoughts during my ride with Bud. He pulled that thing out of the neighborhood to Del Amo Blvd. and waited for traffic to clear. When it was clear, pulls onto Del Amo, loads up the drive line and launches it. He stayed in it through first and second gear and did not get out of it till halfway through third. Then, hard on the brakes to make the stop at Clark. It was really cool. So i tell him, wow Bud, you're pretty crazy. He just says, na, that was nothing, I'm licensed to drive a 7 second car. What??? Turns out, in his younger days, he did a little drag racing. When I say younger I mean in 2006, when he was over 80 year old. Check it out..

Bud Hemstreet' 1955 Dodge Ram Shallow Bed

I met Bud about 10 years ago. His chick lives across the street from us so I see him pretty often. Just about every time I see him he's in his Toyota Avalon. Well, a couple months ago, I pull up to my house and see this thing sitting across the street, parked on the street. At first glance I think, that's a clean, restored truck, I wonder who owns it. But, I had stuff to do so I just went about my business. Then later that afternoon I hear someone get into a car. I hear them as they turn the key and start to crank it over. When it comes to life, it sounds really nasty so I look out my front window and see Bud pulling away in this truck. So, the next time I see him, he's in his Avalon of course but I stopped him and asked about this truck he was driving. He tells me it's his old work truck from his auto repair shop. He bought it back in 1962 with a bad crank shaft. Yeah, I said 1962, Bud is 87 years old. He ran his shop, Busy B garage from 1954 to 1967 in Norwalk Ca. Check out the phone number on the door, that was his OG number! Anyway he fixed the crank shaft issue and drove it up until 2003 when he and his son started the restoration. This time around they spliced in a Nova front clip to give him some brakes and better steering. They also used a Ford 9" rear end with 3.90 gears. That nasty sound I heard comes from a 500" Chevy big block that bud says makes about 550hp. Behind that is a Art Car 200r trans with a 2500 converter. Body and paint were done at Barry Whites shop in Corona. These picture were taken with a cell phone and don't do this truck any favors but, this is a very well sorted project. I'll have another story about Bud later too. For now though, here's the truck...

Wayne' World Part 2, "Last Call"

Wayne Smith' 93" S&S Shovel. Earlier this year we did the mock up and fab work for Wayne. But once we got it there, he wanted to take it apart, have all the finishes done and then, reassemble it himself. That way, he would know the bike and be better equipped to deal with it if he had any issues out on the road. Made sense to us so, we did what we do and sent it home with him. Well, he finished it and did a really nice job too. He brought it back in last Friday and asked us if we could give a once-over to make sure he didn't miss anything and help get it on the road. He pretty much nailed it. We gave it a nut and bolt check, adjusted the clutch, bled the rear brake, put some gear oil in, made sure he had oil pressure and gas. We cranked it over and she fired right off and ran like a champ. Check it out...

So we went with a set of Black Bike hubs laced up to Excell aluminum rims with stainless steel spokes. Performance Machine brake calipers, rotors, Contour forward controls and their new Dyna open primary. Progersive Suspenssion covered shocks with a set of their hidden turn signals. Chain Drive. The RX7 Project

About a year or so ago my brother called me and said, hey, I just bought an RX7. My first questions to him was, why? Him being a big car type of guy I could not believe a Mazda was on his hot rod radar. As it turns out, he said he always liked the first gen RX7 and wanted to turbo-charge it. Well here the near finished project. As you can see, from the outside, it still looks pretty much stock, part of of his plan of course. But that's about the only thing stock about it. The first tell-tale sign that there's something going on is the sound you hear when it rolls up, kind of like a two stroke motorcycle or something. He's having a few issues with it running a little hot, water and oil but he said he knows how to cure it. He also set up the suspension with Bilstein shocks, stiffer springs, different sway bars and 411 ping and pinion. Anyway, he said as it sits it made 325hp on a chassis dyno. That may not sound all that great but, I drove it and, in the 2300 pound car it feels very strong. He said he tested it in a drag race against his friends 2011 SRT Hemi Chalanger. He claims it wasn't much of a contest as he walked away from it, with ease. Check it out, he did most of it himself, in his garage. Mazda 13b, Garrett turbo charger, Barry Grant carb, MSD ignition.

Dan Boyds Paughco/Top Shelf Customs FXR Project

We've been working with the guys at Paughco for quite a while now, so when we found out about their new FXR style frame, we knew we had to get one. This one is set up to take a 180mm rear tire but they also offer it in stock dimension as well. This thing should be a lot of fun. Dan went with a Doran Benson built 120" Ultima motor and a 6speed trans. The wheels are Roland Sands Designs chrome Diesels, 18x5.5 rear and 19x2.15 up front. Tires are Metzler ME880s. The forks and trees are from an XR1200R. And somehow, Dan was able to locate a Sputhe Engineering aluminum swing arm.Stay tuned...

VW Drags Fontana, Ca.

Went out to Fontana with James this weekend for the VW drag meet. He's trying to get a feel for how fast the class in running these days. Back in '91 his car went 10.40 at about 120mph. The XR650R Gets Some Mags..

Had some time to spend on the XR project this weekend so I made an attempt to mount the wheels. The rear was the one that was giving me the most trouble. The XR has a very narrow swing arm so fitting the wheel with the cush drive was a little tricky. By using the wheel from one bike and cush drive from another, I think I can get in there. I did have to machine the sprocket surface back about .250 and then machine the lip for the bearing seal back the same amount. I do need to swap the bearings to know for sure though.
The front however is pretty much ready to go. Since the forks and wheel are from different bikes, the spacers, IBS and bearings in the wheel had to changed up a little but I think It's good now. Still have to make a bracket for the brake caliper and do a steering stop though. Still have a lot of work to do but at least it's moving forward.

I posted these pics a few weeks ago, just before Born Free 3. Over the past year, I had seen this bike quite a few times as it was going together. I talked to John about it before and had a pretty good idea where he was going with it. But, the day I took these pictures, it had been a couple months since I'd seen it and I was really stoked to see how nice it turned out. Anyway, I shot the pics and went ahead and put them up. Well, he planned on showing it for the first time at the show so I took the pics down.

I wish more people had the passion and pride for their projects that John has.

Went to visit Chica yesterday and pick up one of his fenders. When I walked in the door, I got a glimpse of these two bike being readied for Born Free 3. While this was Chic's shop, the bikes are being built by a couple of his close friends. The Knucklehead looks okay but, the Pan is a bike that every one should look at and store the image in their minds under "custom motorcycle". He clearly knew how this dish should taste long before getting the ingredients and serving it up. Go to show and see it for yourself, it's a great example of how it should be done. Well, how I think it should be done anyway.

I'm not exactly sure why this didn't work as JoMo racing but my guess is too many people with too many expectations. I say that because the parts they were doing were very fresh and really nice so, I don't think it was the products. Anyway, the good news is, they're up and running as the Speed Merchants now. This time they're down to just a few solid guys with one solid goal. Their 39mm fork, external pre-load adjuster is definitely a "why didn't I think of that" part! Couple of new tools we have been wanting, the rotary table and a small finger break. Brents bike got the blessing from the CHP yesterday, he'll be plated on Friday. Keiths all black softail chopper is on Als table this week after a long wait for a set of black-chrome wheels. Pats Iron head is staring to take shape but still a bunch of stuff to do. The hybrid gets it's shoes, rear wheel retains a cush-drive assembly, part of the reason we needed the rotary table. Couple of shovel heads, one in for service and intake seals the black one is a long-term deal but, its starting to come together too. And, Jims Dyna is about to get the business.

James Geirmans '63 Karman Ghia

James is making some progress with the Ghia. He made the foot pedal set-up which came out really nice. Front and rear brakes are finished and working together. Moon fuel tank is mounted with fuel lines run to the back of the car. The battery box is in, mounted low, in front of the beam, this thing is really looking good. He's planning on using all of the original body work and trim. He still says it's going to be a street car but to me, it's looking more and more like a thirteenhundredtwenty footer. Nice work, James.

Dale Takushi Shovelhead

Dale's an old friend who hung with the crew back in the early 80s, he too hales from the north end of Torrance. Anyway, hes been working on this thing for quite a while now. He got it about eight years ago in the form of a 1979 fxe with a bad rear cylinder. He fixed that and rode it around for a bit but, decided to tear it down and make a few changes, that was about six years ago. From time to time, he would bring it by the shop when he was stumped and we would get him through what ever it was and send him back to his garage. Over the years, its been in the shop a dozen or so times. Each time he brought it, we would notice some new trick he came up with. We would say, yeah Dale, that's neat, then give him some shit about how long it was taking him to get it finished. It was beginning to remind me of his never ending Datsun 510 he built back in the day. Well, had brought it by on Friday as a runner with a couple of minor issues. We through it on the table, sorted him out, gave him a little more shit and this time, sent him out in traffic. Nice work, Dale, now, go put some paint on it!

Brent Barrister's Basket Case hit the streets this weekend. Done right with a bunch of nice up grades, black wheels, PM hand and foot controls, PM brakes, 100" show polished Ultima motor back by a 6speed trans and a hand made Azteca seat, it's nice and it's fast. He'll be terrorizing the streets behind the orange curtain, for sure. Thanks for you patiance, Brent, it was a pleasure working with you.

Joe picked up the Top Shelf Customs 120" Brown Bomber on Saturday. He said he had been looking at a couple other bikes but decided to go with Als. We think he definitely made the right decision, it is a really nice bike! Thanks, Joe we really appreciate your business.
